Olaf has been a Master Mariner for more than 30 years, with a background on tank and general cargo ships with companies such as Mobil Oil, Ben Line and Denholm. In 1986 he became Head of Unit of Hazardous Cargo training at the Centre for Advanced Maritime Studies (CAMS) in Leith and during that period wrote and lectured on hazardous cargo, ship management, safety management and port, harbour and jetty operations.
